Hinkley High School and East Middle School Academic Integrity Policy
Philosophy:
At Hinkley High School and East Middle School we value the ethical qualities of personal integrity and academic honesty. Academic integrity is expected of all members of the school community: students, faculty, administration, and parents. Hinkley/East believe everyone plays a part in each student’s development and therefore explicitly teaches students how to be principled in their actions and to act with honesty and integrity.
This policy adheres to APS policy and aligns with the mission and values of IB to promote personal integrity and to support a culture of academic honesty for all learners.
Understanding Academic Dishonesty
The IB defines academic misconduct as behavior that results in, or may result in, the student or any other student gaining an unfair advantage in one or more assessment components. Academic misconduct includes:
- Plagiarism—the representation, intentionally or unwittingly, of the ideas, words or work of another person without proper, clear and explicit acknowledgment.
- Collusion—supporting academic misconduct by another student, as in allowing one’s work to be copied or submitted for assessment by another.
- Duplication of work—the presentation of the same work for different assessment components.
- Any other behavior that gives an unfair advantage to a student or that affects the results of another student (falsifying data, misconduct during an examination, creating spurious reflections).
For most tests and student work students are expected to work independently but with appropriate support from teachers and other adults, although there are many occasions when collaboration with other students is an important part of the learning process.
Details of IB policies and procedures to support academic integrity as part of the external assessment process are available in the annual publication Middle Years Programme Assessment procedures.

Procedures for Academic Dishonesty Behavior
First offense:
In the event that a student submits work that has been plagiarized or engages in any form of academic dishonesty, including the unauthorized use of Artificial Intelligence, the student and teacher or designated staff member will meet to determine the reason this occurred. The student will be given a chance to defend themself and to present their perspective on the situation. A plan will then be developed which will include how the student will make restitution, identified support needed, and how and when the student will be given an opportunity to successfully complete the assignment or alternate assignment. The incident will be recorded in Infinite Campus (IC) under the contact log and the parents will be notified.
Subsequent offenses:
In the event that a student continues to demonstrate academic dishonesty the following will apply:
- They will be given an opportunity to complete the assignment or be given an alternate assignment.
- There will be a conference with Teacher, Parent, Student.
- A referral to the Dean/Advocate will be submitted, with the potential for up to two days of out of school suspension.
- If academic dishonesty continues then the student will need to meet with the IB Coordinator in order to assess if they should continue in the IB Diploma Program.
All offenses and parent contacts must be entered in Infinite Campus under the contact log.
