Supporting Students at Home

Don’t assume that your Eagles will know exactly what to do, especially when online collaboration is a relatively new experience for them. As rewarding as it may be, collaboration is challenging and teachers will give clear instructions on how to complete assignments together, where they can find a discussion forum, the chat tool or how to send a private message to a teacher if they need to do so.

Ask for help-Encourage your Eagle to ask for help whenever they encounter a hurdle in their learning process. Staff members will communicate when students should expect an answer.

Stay focused- The learning environment has a huge impact on productivity and concentration. This is naturally done by teachers in their classroom, but distance learning comes with a whole new set of challenges.

For example, not all students have access to a quiet place to study. That’s why it’s important to help them eliminate distractions as much as possible.

  • Don’t have a separate room? Maybe they have some noise-canceling headphones around.

  • Don’t have a desk? The kitchen table can be a makeshift study desk for a few hours each day.

Also watch out for online distractions. As distance learning students know, without some help, they’d probably spend way too much time online. Luckily, there are plenty of online tools available that keep track of one’s online activity and help students stay focused for a longer period of time.

Plan a daily routine-Having a daily schedule and goals to accomplish gives students a sense of predictability. When schools close, a lot of routines go out the window. This necessity is needed now more than ever. A daily routine is not only helpful for their learning, it also supports their wellbeing. Google calendar is a tool that could help support routine and time management.

In closing, I would like to thank you all in advance for the continuous support and partnership that makes East great. The success of our students will be a joint effort and we will get through this together! I am available through email wbshaw@aurorak12.org. Feel free to contact me directly if there are any questions or concerns.

With Gratitude,

Bryant Shaw-Principal
